Wipro Technologies - I Got Placed At Last!

Posted at 6:20 pm on Sunday, March 11th, 2007 | Posted in General

As the days were nearing for me to do something about my MS in US of A pressure mounted from my home front that I should apply and other. But I had my own share of problems to deal. This placement with wipro came as a welcome relief from all that.

Even though we were notified weeks before that we would be having Wipro Off-Campus placement event, I never managed to study or prepare about anything in particular. People were literally cramming the vocabulary and aptitude into their brains. But I was not into much preparation or mugging ever in my entire life. So on the day of the writen test I was a little apprehensive seeing all those people, about 2000 to 3000 of them, with books and large notebooks seemingly busy. But nevertheless I went to the written my usual self - No Preparation.

The Written Test: The written had three section - English, Aptitude and Technical. English was a breeze and was over even before it began. By now my stomach was like groaning for some food since I had nothing much the previous night and nothing at all that morning. I started out with aptitude. The aptitude here was a bit time taking but the questions solved towards the end. I thought may be it was because of my lack of practice. But later found out that everybody felt the same. I completed the technical the best I can. There were a lot of operating systems questions of which I had just a little bit of knowledge.

After the written waiting was the worst part. I did not know whether I would get through or not. But I still waited out in the sun - hungry and dirty. When the results were out I felt and really knew that today was my day. Because I was sure once I would get to present myself at an interview nothing can stop me from getting placed. I felt really sorry for a few of my friends who went through a lot of practice and preparation but could not get through.

Technical: One of my friends came out elated that he got through the technical. I wished to god that he would send to that same room not the other who was literally grilling everyone going in. Luckily I went into the same room. He shook my hand and asked me sit down. The first thing the Interviewer saw on my CV was that I had a blog - This Blog. He was kind of impressed and asked me about the stuff I write among other things. He went through my CV and asked me to write a few code snippets. Then my problem struck again - I cannot write code under pressure. Believe me its a pretty big problem for an unplaced student, I could not even blurt out a single legible piece of code for him to get convinced. He said that it cast a bad impression on my CV that I did not know what I wrote in that CV of mine. I told I never wrote anything that I have not done with my very own hands and practiced. But still he needed some confirmation. So I asked me to quiz me about networks. He said that he knew that I knew networks through our earlier talk. So he asked me some other topic. “C” was the only thing I could blurt out. He gave me simple pattern that I could recollect from Deitel & Deitel: C Programming. But I worked out the logic then and there and showed it to him. He said that my CV was very much like his and that he wished to see me at Wipro. He then said that he liked my handshake, that it was firm and showed that I’m positive. HE THEN GAVE ME MY HR FORM. One thing I regretted was not finding out the name of that wonderful person who cleared me through Technical. If I get a chance to meet him again he’ll be getting a treat from me for sure.

HR Interview: I was literally jumping in my heart after I got that HR form. Then the wait till my HR was a long one. But it still came. He called me in and asked me to sit down. We had a general talk like my interests and other things. I went a wee bit beyond the line when I(yes I asked him not the other way around) asked him “What else…” :P while he paused for a short look at my CV. He told me that my technical interviewer had conveyed that I was good at networks. He asked what I would do if there was no opening in networks in Wipro. I told him I was comfortable with working in software development as well and that networks is not my life’s aim or anything. He then asked me where I would be willing to work. I told him anywhere, I really meant that. He said how about Timbuktu. I said okay I could work there. He asked me if I knew where Timbuktu was? I told him Africa recollecting something I read long back. We’ll he had some other notion of Timbuktu so he asked me to check my geography. I did and Timbuktu IS in Africa. He then filled out some forms and told me that HR was over.

I had to wait till 1 AM in the morning to get my result but it was worth all the time in world to hear those word. :D
